After succeeding triumphantly as the crowned winners in the last edition of #BitterSweetPlaylist, we now satisfy our promise by gifting an exclusive chat with electronic pop duo IDER. The song which landed them here, ‘Body Love’ – is a swirling, woozy devotion to self-love, with dual vocal sensations harmonising and tantalising a memorable sonic moment. It’s as close as we can get to perfection.
In ‘Many Things About…’ we like to keep the questions entertaining and random, but most importantly, revealing. (After all, that’s what you came here for, right?) So we hope you enjoy, and let us know who next you would like to see in the hot seat.
What first attracted you to music?
Lily – I grew up in quite a musical family so the first attraction probably came from having it around me and wanting to be a part of it. Before I learned any instruments, I used to get my uncle to be my pianist so I could sing my fave songs like a proper little diva.
Meg – Sitting in the back of the car with my sisters on long journeys singing along to ‘Come On Over’ by Shania Twain
What is it about writing songs that you most enjoy?
Lily – I love the first bit when you start writing a song and it’s totally unfiltered. You haven’t thought about it yet it’s just like releasing a feeling.
Meg – When you feel like you’ve written something worth holding on to and you get this feeling that you don’t get anywhere else. It’s like pure satisfaction and being totally in the moment.
Who are the vocalists that you looked up to when you were growing up?
Lily – Etta James, Nina Simone, Beyonce (of Destiny’s Child), Dido
Meg – Gillian Welch, Jeff Buckley, Stevie Nicks
Can you tell us a fact about your new single – ‘Body Love’?
We wrote Body Love over quite a long period of time. We kept coming back to it and rewriting it differently each time depending on how we / one of us were feeling at that particular point. When we listen to the song now we feel like it really represents a drawn out period of time – it’s like a long journey concentrated into a few minutes.
Do you have any pre-show warm up techniques?
Yea we do have a warm up – not sure how legit it is / if it actually does anything to help. But it’s become a bit of a necessary ritual.
If you had to pick just one look from the ’90s that you’d still rock today, which one would that be?
Lily- Braids. All about that.
Meg – A killer crop top.
What has been the most memorable fan encounter you’ve had?
We were throwing a wobbly on the tube and having one of those typical artist moments of self doubt and anxiety etc.
A woman sitting next to us turned around, asked if we were IDER and said that she’d seen us at a festival in the summer and told us to keep going.
We couldn’t believe it. It was as if God was sitting next to us on the train.
How do you take your coffee?
Milk, one sug.
What’s your favourite thing about Christmas?
Lily – Getting cosy and hanging with family.
Meg – Pigs in blankets.
What’s the best piece of news you’ve heard this week?
Lily – One of my best gals is getting a border collie puppy.
Meg – Winning this of course.
What makes you happy?
Lily – Swimming
Meg – Laughing
If you could get a selfie with any celebrity, who would that be and why?
Lily – I feel like a selfie with Mac DeMarco would be the ultimate steal.
Meg – Lady Gaga – speaks for itself.
What’s coming up for IDER in the remainder of this year?
We’ve got a super busy few weeks – more live shows in Europe with Ibeyi and some others in the pipe line which we’re v excited for. We’re also in the studio recording new music ready to dish out in 2k18.
