TRACK OF THE DAY: Maguire – ‘Fallible’

Fallible‘ is the second release from London based singer-songwriter Gillian Maguire, aka. MAGUIRE. Following on from her impressive debut ‘Behind The Screen’ back in April, and with more material on the way in 2019, she is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, who’s been writing and performing since aged 16, and recently supported Ry X on his recent UK tour. She also is one half of the ambient arthouse electronic project, Awkward Moments along with DJ/Producer Mimi Xu.

Her classical training shines through on this number, as a haunting, dexterous piano line runs through from the start, building an air of mystery around the song before layers of lush string and brass arrangements flesh out the music, bringing The National’s softer moments to mind. MAGUIRE’s vocals heavily invoke those of PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke, and the whole song carries an air of Radiohead’s ‘Daydreaming,’ as the initial weightless, floating feeling from the melody is brought back into focus by her candid lyrics. “Married minds, united souls, it’s your touch I yearn to know” she sings.

The song, in her own words, delves into “what it means to truly know another soul, and whether this can be achieved purely through the mind or whether love requires physical intimacy in order to ripen and grow. It maps the frustrations of a love affair conducted in secret, exploring the intrinsic human flaws of desire and greed that plague us all.”

It’s a remarkably intimate, restrained and mature offering for such an early release, one which marks MAGUIRE out with great potential over the coming months. ‘Fallible’ lands on May 10th across all platforms. The debut EP is set to follow in June, and MAGUIRE is already at work in the studio on future material, collaborating with producer Liam Howe (FKA Twigs / Lana Del Rey). We can’t wait to hear more.
