Before this week, SHELLS (the adopted moniker of singer-songwriter Sarah Sheldrake) hadn’t released a new song since the winter of 2016, so it’s with a celebratory yelp that we introduce new single, ‘Heart Beating.’ And it’s a stunning vocal-led beauty which places the artist’s’ songwriting in prime position, as a meaningful track that explores the emotional ties that remain after a relationship ends, to the resounding beat of bodily endurance.
The return of SHELLS provides us with one of the best pieces of music we’ve heard all year, the artist continues to expand on the blissfully emotive path she started almost three years ago. This track is the first in a line of new releases that will form her upcoming second EP, Colours.
‘Heart Beating’ is a reconciliation as much as a catalyst for showcasing progression, the closely-recorded vocals offer clarity and a connection that befits the artist’s’ intimate writings while the production brings in new ideas. Immensely invigorating as well as hook-driven, the song could easily be heard on primetime radio and not sound out of place, but also, it would work just as well as an alternative pop offshoot on a big streaming playlist, or even better, to be appreciated up close and personal on a live stage somewhere soon.
Welcome back, SHELLS.
‘Heart Beating’ will be available on all streaming and digital services from Friday 22nd March. If the wait is too long, you can pre-order the track on iTunes right now, here.
