TRACK OF THE DAY: Gender Roles – ‘Skin’

Oh yeah! ‘Skin’, the lead single from Gender Roles’ new EP ‘Planet X-Ray’ is the perfect fuzzed-out, bratty tonic to all the bullshit things that are inexplicably happening. Snarling vocals, brutal bass, and a heavy dose of cymbals congeal together with off-kilter guitar licks to create a feel-bad-feel-good winter hit.

If you had three guesses as to where these chaps are from, you could probably donate the last two to Piers Morgan to make sure he nails the eternal ‘Am I a total prick?’ question, as their sound screams ¡Brighton! as loud as their pier is long. No surprises they’ve spent time playing with Bird Skulls and Beachtape and while we’re playing the comparisons game I’d chuck in fellow noiseniks Bloody Knees and Dinosaur Pile-Up.

Vigorously enjoyable, and vigorously vivid, check out ‘Skin’ below with an appropriately colourful video, and if you dig it, the full EP is out now on BandCamp.

Gender Roles’ debut EP ‘Planet X-Ray’ is available now through Hanger Records, featuring lead single ‘Skin’.
