Philadelphia based, alt-rock spearheads Birthday Boy have given us the premiere of their new EP ‘Hi Anxiety’. A collection of riotous and loud, towering rock songs.
The landscape for high energy, alternative rock is predominantly current right now, with the trailblazers from the 90’s still holding the torch high for the genre, it has indeed inspired new blood to emerge. Like today’s band in question – Birthday Boy – who also breed their own pertinent rallying call, through the medium of song.
Opener ‘DNR’ broods for the first minute in quiet reflection, before charging into a hearty stomp, unbridled with energy and dying to breakout of its frustrated mindset. ‘Make Amends’ starts strong and grows with angst, visceral and guttural. This is the one that will have the crowds bopping and screaming their lungs out in exhilaration. If you have any energy left, then the melodic sway of ‘Old Habits’ will come and whisk you away, before title-track ‘Hi Anxiety’ rounds things off with aplomb. Angular guitars surround roaring bass and raw furious percussion in this forthright anthem.
