In Conversation with…KITA ALEXANDER

Aussie songstress Kita Alexander is winning hearts all around the globe right now, with her easy listening sound. It’s perfectly crafted pop that oozes sophistication. She’s recently released her debut EP titled ‘Like You Want To’ – from the wistful, breezy sweetness of the title track to the funky chilled disco prowess of ‘Wild Heart’, this is a proud and honest work from pop’s newest IT-girl.

We caught a few minutes with the singer to talk about her debut EP, Taylor Swift and more.

Your debut EP has just been released. Can you let us into a little secret about the recording of the EP?

Hmm, I don’t think there is a secret behind it….It’s too truthful. It’s me.

Your music is so much more than just plain pop. It’s sweet and refreshing, yes. But it’s also very funky and sophisticated, where do you think this stems from?

Thank you! It means a lot to me that you can hear that. I think it just stems straight from my personality, I love to do the popular thing but I do it that’s true to me. I don’t follow trends. I do what’s fun and what excites me.

Which song on the EP means the most to you at this time and why?

Probably Wild Heart. It was when I was dealing with the end of a relationship to find my love for music. It was a really hard moment in my life. Finding balance.

When you were growing up who were the artists that you looked up to? Have you always been a fan of pop music?

The weird thing is I never really liked pop music until recently. I don’t know why…When I was young I idolised Freddie Mercury.  He was unique, his songs were cutting edge and he was sophisticated.

You grew up on an Avocado farm in Australia. Speaking of growing up on a family run farm, that’s not dissimilar to a certain Miss T Swift. She grew up on a Christmas tree farm! Do you see your career progressing in a similar direction to that of Taylor’s – starting small and gradually taking you to great heights?

Haha I never knew that…No wonder, she’s got the cheerful spirit of a Christmas elf. I see my career going to great heights for sure! Not in the same clean pop way as Taylor, but in my own way you know? A little bit more real, a little bit more tangible.

What do you miss the most about home when you’re travelling?

Cooking my own food. I love to cook; and to have all my own herbs and spices and random health food things makes life and cooking so much more fun. When you’re on the road it’s all hamburgers and fries haha.

If you were to take a classic song by another artist – a song that you love and give it the Kita Alexander treatment. What song would you pick and why?

I’d pick Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks. The song is perfect as is but imagine making it modern with new sounds. It would be huge again. It’s just so rocking.

Who are the new artists that you’re feeling excited about right now?

Jarryd James of course. He is so brilliant and the nicest guy. I think when you mix those two things, the person has the ability to go all the way.

If your music was a person, how would you describe it?

Tall, lanky, rough around the edges, girl and boy, awkward, nice, truthful. What a weird question haha.

What’s the plan for the New Year?

I’m going up to Byron for New Years. Going to run a muck at falls with some buddies. and then try and get back on track for 2016. Straight back into writing, and hopefully just tour a whole lot more!
