A thumping throwback to a Seventies four-to-the-floor funky bass line sets the tone for this new single – ‘B Side‘ – from Bath quintet Kalpa. The cheekiness of the music makes you bop and walk with a spring in your step in the hope that it’s setting you up for a brain melt-down of songwriting brilliance, but alas, it doesn’t.
I’m afraid to say that this definitely feels like a B side, the song doesn’t particularly move me enough for me to write enough good things about it, the vocal melody and lyrics aren’t the best, I find myself drifting away from the narrative of the song and unfortunately, it reminds me too much of more recent Paramore / early Peace but without the hooky chorus or dynamic variety, the first 20 seconds are solid at least, however familiar they may sound.
I hope for better next time.
