As she announces the arrival of her debut album later this year, Argentinian born, London based artist Malena Zavala gives us a sneak peek of what’s to come with her new single ‘Could You Stay.’
Setting herself apart from the noise of the London indie rock scene, her latest track blends singable guitar lines and a unique vocal style, highlighting her truly distinctive dream pop sound.
A departure from her earlier tracks, which explore cultural identity and free-thinking mentality, ‘Could You Stay’ contemplates the dilemma of falling in love with a friend and and concealing it. Clean bluesy guitar tones, subtle bass lines and Latin rhythms provide the backdrop for Zavala’s wistful vocals as she moves from speculative verse to lingering chorus.
Taking inspiration from psych rock influences Tame Impala, and guitarists Devendra Banheart and Blake Mills, Zavala has a rare and refreshing approach to her writing; drawing on intelligent and interesting themes while satisfying the desire for lyrical hooks and pop melodies.
If her latest tracks are anything to go by, we can look forward to an eclectic and exciting debut from the musician, artist and filmmaker.
Released on Yucatan Records, Malena Zavala’s debut album ‘Aliso’ will be available digitally and on 12” gatefold vinyl from the 13th of April, followed by a release show on 9th of May at Bermondsey Social Club.
