LISTEN: Tandem Felix – ‘Were You There (When They Crucified the Birthday Boy)?’

‘Hi Lewis, I really think this track will catch your vibe, along the lines of Happyness.’

It’s true! I do like Happyness, both the band and the concept (the Will Smith film less so…) and this slice of lilting Americana from Dublin band Tandem Felix satisfies my desires for both.

As well as sharing a predilection for Birthday themed songs, it’s the knack for warm, laid back melodies and harmonies ensconced inside a slacker-rock shell that is reminiscent of the London three-piece.

This is in fact the first taste of music for two years from Tandem Felix, and songwriter David Tapley claims it is “the first crop yielded after an exciting period of rediscovering what I love about making music” – proving sometimes time does heal all.

Listing influences such as Sparklehorse and Wilco makes total sense, but it really sends my mind to Beck’s sister albums (albeit separated by a dozen years) Sea Change and Morning Phase. With the real-life Beck channeling his endless creative energies into POP-with-a-capital-everything at the moment, as goes the recently-released Colors (sic), Tandem Felix makes an apt replacement delivering winsome alt.folk jams. Hopefully we don’t have to wait another two years for more tunes from Tapley and co.
