LISTEN: Johnny Kills – ‘My Shirt Guy Is High’

Johnny Kills’ latest release ‘My Shirt Guy Is High’ continues their trend of creating direct, tongue-in-cheek fuzzy rock music. It’s a wink and a nudge of a song, perfectly self-aware and standing proudly like a filthy toddler beaming at its mother. And just like a mother and her child, it’s hard not to feel endeared to the track.

Lyrically, ‘MSGIH’ does not allow for depth; Shakespeare it ain’t. Vocally it’s a snarl. Instrumentally it flops around in as inebriated a state as its protagonist. And yet there’s no pretence surrounding it as a song. It’s very much a simple, straightforward ‘look at me’ song, much in the same tone as their previous single ‘Let’s Talk About Me’, and just as delightfully impetuous.

If there’s one apt description that can be levied on the song, it bears some similarity to Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind?’. That is, it resembles a sleazy, drugged up version of the tune, and is very charming for such a reminder. Johnny Kills know exactly what they’re doing, and it’s bloody great.
