Dublin singer-songwriter Maria Kelly returns with folk-pop production ‘Far Below’, taken from her forthcoming EP ‘The Things I Should’.
Kelly’s back catalogue is a concoction of ear-pleasing melodies and meaningful song writing, and ‘Far Below’ is another great testament to her subtlety in the folk-pop genre. Lucy Rose, Daughter and fellow newcomer Billie Marten are all obvious antecedents, but Kelly holds her own with a delicate Irish lilt and candid lyrics.
‘Far Below’ offers a dreamlike environment fuelled by introspective melodies and ethereal vocals. The well-structured track begins with a taciturn smoothness guided only by subtle guitar chords and Kelly’s spirited tones. Later, this tranquillised calm is disrupted by intermittent cymbal clashes and strong vocal interjections to power a gradual crescendo.
Floods of indie-folk-pop singers get lost in the abyss, but if her debut EP is anything to go by, the future looks bright for Maria Kelly.
Maria Kelly’s ‘The Things I Should’ EP will be released May 19th on Veta Records. A tour will also commence on Saturday 29th April, for a full list of dates, see below.
