EP REVIEW: Meadowlark – ‘Nocturnes’

After years of writing in various cottages dotted around the UK, where the two would go so they could be free from distractions and able to focus solely on songwriting, the Bristol based duo Meadowlark have treated us to the release of their new EP ‘Nocturnes’.

Kate McGill and Daniel Broadley combine folk with electronica to create a unique and soul-stirring fragrance of sound. This time round, the two have taken three of their favourite Meadowlark tracks, stripped away all the electronics to present the songs in a more raw and truthful way. Additionally, there is a breathtaking rendition of the 2007 much-loved Sugababes hit ‘About You Now’.

Previous single ‘Headlights’ was originally full of upbeat electro-pop, but in this renovated version it brings out the softer and more emotional side to the lyrics and overall spirit of the song.

‘Satellite’ has minimalistic changes; the main difference being that the original has more of an up-tempo baseline. Whereas in their alternative adaptation, the lyrics hit a much deeper resonance as the backing music is less intense, making Kate’s heavenly voice the cynosure of all ears.

Initially, I thought the song ‘Eyes Wide’ was about a girl’s love not being equally reciprocated. However, after listening several times I recognised the cleverness of the lyrics. The ambiguity adds depth and pathos to the story of the song. The title, Eyes Wide, is a metaphorical message; keep your wits about you.

The track ‘About You Now’ is the only cover on the EP. The original being the perfect pop tune to dance along to, Meadowlark’s reconstruction shows the song off in an alternative light. The overall atmosphere of the song has altered, giving it have a more acoustic and passionate feel. After paying attention to the lyrics, I realised just how emotional they are. How they tell a tale of a women who came to the conclusion of her love, too late and with Meadowlark stripping away the pop side of it, making the song feel more raw, the touching impact of the lyrics truly touch the heart.

On top of this release, the pair are set to head out on an 6-date headline tour in May/June. The duo have supported many impressive artists over the years such as Michael Kiwanuka, Gavin James, Rae Morris and most recently the incredible guys from Amber Run but this will be their first headlining tour.
