LISTEN: Girl Ray – ‘Stupid Things’

In a break from convention, I’m gonna give the artist the first word here:

“It’s about crushing really hard on someone, and finding myself doing fucking ridiculous things to feel like we’ve got some kind of connection. Watching films that they mentioned fleetingly or ordering their favourite drink at a bar. Very stupid but happens every single time, ha ha”

Says Poppy Hankin, lead vocalist and guitarist of Girl Ray, of their latest single ‘Stupid Things’ and how damn relatable is that? Beginning with Rankin’s now unmistakable off-kilter vocals and some sprightly piano twinkling, before settling into its merry-cum-wistful groove, ‘Stupid Things’ is a twee-pop tour de force that Belle and Sebastian would be proud of.

Cutting their teeth playing shows with indie darlings Slow Club and Ezra Furman, Girl Ray (Iris McConnell and Sophie Moss completing the talented trio) are already gearing up to release their debut album on Moshi Moshi, not bad for three people who have just finished their A-Levels.

Off the back of a tour with label mates Teleman, Girl Ray are rightfully popping up as regulars on the upcoming festival circuit, so make sure to catch ‘em (if you’re at any of the summer shows featured below), or better yet, get down to The Lexington on 23rd May for a sure-to-be-swell London headline set. In the meantime, listen to ‘Stupid Things’ right here, right now, and be sure to share it with your crush – it’ll definitely impress them.

‘Stupid Things’ is released via Moshi Moshi on 14th April.
