Melbourne’s Mango Retreat share their first taste of new music in over a year with the rootsy carnival pomp of ‘Here On The Earth’. Banjo, mandolin, Hammond organ, guitar and lively percussion playfully dance around woop-and-call harmonies and an exuberant lead vocal. Leaving only one route of response: to dance uncontrollably in a kind of passionate and unconstrained chaos.
The song came together just as spontaneously, written and demoed in the back of a van. Although the version you hear below was recorded in the Teskey Brothers’ recording studio to analogue tape, so in many ways there’s still a rough vibrancy buried within the song’s makeup. ‘Here On The Earth’ crosses the heartfelt earnest of early-Run River North with the joyous uproar of Vance Joy’s folk pop tales. This is one you’ll want to hear on repeat, so go ahead and dive in, it’s a brush with destiny.
Mango Retreat will launch the single with a commemorating gig on Saturday 1st October at Melbourne’s Ding Dong Lounge. Tickets are available on the night for $10, for more information head here.
