San Fransisco is an inspiring place – coloured in rolling fog, hilly landscapes and fragrant with culture. Yet for the man behind DONCAT, Duncan Nielsen finds his inspiration comes from a much more internal place. So to hear that his home state takes centre stage on new single ‘Western’ is somewhat of a surprise.
The new cut runs wild holding a fearless energy at its core. Instrumentally, the riffs are sharp and grooving, the bass is taut and rhythmic, and the percussion adds swing and texture. Although beneath this sheen, Nielsen’s mindset is transfixed by the worries of modern life (“I could die without a dime”, he admits) but this pessimism doesn’t bring him down. Surprisingly, it is his driving force. Propelled by the thrill of living on the edge, Nielsen teaches us to relish those moments of good, honest living, for it’s those moments when we’re at our lowest that makes us appreciate the high times even more.
DONCAT’s sophomore LP ‘Easy Cowboy’ will be released on 9th September. Secure your copy here.
