Scruff of the Neck records clearly have a good thing going for themselves. In a night which showcased a number of acts associated with the independent label and promoter, it was impressive that, right from the off, Manchester’s Sound Control was playing host to new talent of a dizzying height. The night was about collaboration, with new music advocates, The Hyve and Australia-now-Manchester-based label Canvas Sounds also co-promoting the event alongside SOTN. Each bringing their own expertise to the table.
Dream indie duo FLIIIS kicked off the night with a rousing enthusiasm that surprised and electrified the audience. They perfectly bridged the gap of live instrumentation and use of samples, creating an exciting and dynamic show. They even outdid the rest of the bands by having significantly more cowbell than any of the other three acts (you’ve gotta love a bit of cowbell).
Glass Caves brought a pleasing nostalgia to the line-up. Seemingly having just stepped out of a time machine from the swinging 60s, the band twinned a summer of love look with a set of modern, uplifting material.
Soaring in afterwards was the turbo-charged synth rampage of SKIES. Blurring the line between sampling and live performance, the boy-girl two piece went full throttle on their performance from start to finish.
And finally, the golden boys of the evening, arrived: Delamere. Cranking out bangers such as Heart, Bright Young Things, and their latest single Kill It, the band were as impressive live as on record. Their performance was solid, not least because of how at ease the band were with the crowd, bantering throughout and regularly raising smiles. There was a lot to love about their set, it was tight, it was concise, it was direct and it was catchy as hell.
Overall, it was a great display of musical prowess and technical ability from all the acts involved, a cracking night of promising new music.
