Vinyl Perspective: Alcopop! Records on Record Store Day 2016

Held every third Saturday in April is Record Store Day (taking place on Saturday 16th April this year). Physical formats are very important to us, and with RSD approaching, we wanted to properly celebrate the all mighty vinyl record. So in the lead up, we decided to catch up with a few of our favourite record labels to discuss their cherished memories with the medium, and the RSD release that catches their eye the most. Today’s label in focus is Alcopop! Records.

Written by Jack Clothier, co-founder of Alcopop! Records.

Soooo. We are Alcopop! Records – an Oxford based independent label who have been going for a right few years now and won the AIM Small Label of the Year Award, which was nice. Home to the likes of johnny foreigner, Fight Like Apes, Indoor Pets, Helen Love, OhBoy! and more – we love magnificent hits, and all who produce them. Started with a gamble on some football which paid for our first release, we’ve grown organically over time and release ace records and do fun stuff – like temporarily buying the UKIP website and putting out the QI podcast on vinyl, the first UK podcast on vinyl ever…With a secret track from Corey Taylor.

The record that resonates with you the most…

Like. Ever? Man – that’s a tough question. The greatest record I’ve ever purchased is the multi-coloured 4 x 12” edition of Zaireeka by The Flaming Lips, which is INSANE – but requires playing on 4 different record players at the same time, which is incredibly difficult to organise. If not that, then perhaps my favourite ‘put on and play’ vinyl is Pup by Pup – because it’s absolute gold! From beginning to end, a fucking GLORIOUS vinyl which I love to listen to…It feels right, it feels vital and I truly love it.

The record store day release this year you’re most excited about…

I think there are three absolute musts for my shopping basket this year.

1.) Is the outrageously awesome compilation from our pals at Too Pure Singles Club, which looks like a collection you can really hang your proverbial hat on

2.) Flaming Lips Lightning Strikes The Postman – because they’re pretty much one of the greatest bands in the world…

And 3.) That Beach Slang record, because Beach Slang are really ace – and I’ve been well into what I’ve heard so far.

I would buy that Alcopop! one, but that one will sell out pretty quick, right 🙂
