Lyrically influenced by her family, who are from Tanzania, Amani references her mother’s words “Lebeka Leka,” “leka” meaning “let go” in Kirundi, and states that she “was particularly thinking about fear, how often we get caught up in it that it kind of distorts everything that we want.” The layered harmonies and beautiful melodies cement the important message that Amani is gracefully reminding us about.
The combination of the airy vocals, use of panning, and textured instrumentation is a breath of fresh air, reminiscent of a summer’s day. Focusing on self-improvement and growth within the lyrics, Amani foreshadows her dreams and her future plans to move to London to work on more music.
The music video for the track shows Beckah Amani spending time with her loved ones, her muse for the single. It encapsulates the meaning of the song perfectly, with sunny days and moments with those you love dearly, whilst also proving “it’s the interaction with family and friends that override the presence, weight and pull of these fears; because their voices are the ones that truly matter.”
‘Lebeka Leka’ is the newest addition to an already phenomenal discography from Beckah Amani, and hopefully another successful step on her journey of development as an artist.
