Los Angeles singer-songwriter A.O. Gerber started writing her new single while driving to Lincoln City, Oregon, on her first solo tour.
The raw emotions of ending a traumatic relationship days earlier contrasted hugely with what she recalls as the `intense calm of the surrounding natural beauty’ along her trip. She finished it when she arrived, in a campground car park on an unplugged electric guitar.
Listening to ‘In The Morning‘ you feel that disparity as the opening minute of world-weary, woozy introspection gives way to a rising storm of empowerment.
‘In The Morning’ is a powerful taster for her debut album, Another Place to Need, which has been three years in the making and finally surfaces next month.
Self-produced, the single’s heartfelt opening line of “Here I am again” nails the need for a fresh beginning and the track grows to roar underpinned by some lovely use of brass, and then fades as if the emotional storm has blown itself out and a calmer state is returning.
The first couple of listens brought to mind idiosyncratic New Zealander Aldous Harding, while A.O. Gerber’s official press release draws comparisons with Cate Le Bon. Whichever reference point you choose to make, neither is bad company to be in.
The album is due to be released on May 22nd via Hand In Hive / Copper Mouth Records.
