Australia has a new pop beauty to call their name far and wide, Jack River (aka Holly Rankin) announces her intentions with bohemian crowning glory ‘Palo Alto’. The prairie spanning cut is lifted off debut EP ‘Highway Songs No. 2’, and is a love-spurned, attention-grabbing jawdropper.
Rankin’s voice takes many forms, delivering depth and lightness at once – the rustic romance of Angel Olsen mixed in with the glossier sweetness of Gwen Stefani and the dark edges of Lana Del Rey. Jack River notes that she doesn’t accept the expected methods of modern-age music making: “I think in our world right now a lot of things are so homogenised and repetitive, we expect repetitiveness. I want to avoid that.” She marches to her own drum and in our book, that’s the kind of attitude we like to see in an artist. Go Jack River!
Her debut EP ‘Highway Songs No. 2’ is released on 7th October via I OH YOU.
