Sometimes a track is lifted above its average-to-good trajectory towards becoming something more special by a single aspect. In this particular case Sarah Negahdari’s unique and soaring vocals provide an impassioned centre-point to Happy Hollows’ new single ‘Way Home’. A swirly-synthy build-up makes way for a driving alt-rock section, ushered in by the shiver-inducing first vocal squall of the titular line ‘my way home!’.
Working with a producer team that has lent their talents to the likes of Best Coast, Grizzly Bear and Interpol it’s no wonder that some of the tropes that imbue the best indie-rock tracks are apparent. And building on that, it’s no surprise that bassist and central member Charles Mahoney is a professor, considering the nod to the more intellectual side of the scene. Carefree surf-indie this is not; compelling and well-constructed songsmithery it is.
