Curated Playlists

LISTEN IN // Parlour Tricks ‘On the Road’ Playlist

New York’s Parlour Tricks bring us sophisticated pop, and with the release of their new single and title-track from their latest album ‘Broken Hearts/Bones’, now is the best time to introduce yourself to the infectious and heartfelt harmonics of the sisterhood.

To celebrate the trio’s new string of tour dates in March, we caught up with them to discuss the songs that make up their essential ‘On the Road’ playlist. Form an orderly queue, and get ready to dance, sing, vent and just simply rejoice the night away.

“Horchata” – Vampire Weekend.

“We sometimes do this thing (borne out of the most special kind of van-entrapment) where we go “ready set go” and two people have to start singing a random song at the same time and see if they pick the same song.  It never happens…until it happened with ‘Horchata’.

“Beggin & Pleadin” – Brandy.

“BRANDY IS BACK. jk she never left.”

“How Do I Know” – Here We Go Magic.

“We’ve listened to it so many times in the van. The first time we heard it was a sunny day driving into Pittsburgh, windows down. A few weeks later, it was on as we entered Waco before a show at sunset, and there was a heavy singalong. “When you come out clean from the shower/ squeak to the touch and you smell like a flower” is on our list of lyrics we wish we’d written.”

“Rattlesnake” – St. Vincent.

“That whole album is remarkable. This song gets us going. The ultimate soundtrack to any activity.”

All of Jagged Little Pill – Alanis Morissette.

“‘You Oughta Know‘, if we had to choose one.”

“The Ballad of Dorothy Parker” – Prince.

“Terry says ‘I have always wanted to take a bubble bath with my pants on’.”

Sunday Candy” – Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment.

“A brass section breakdown and gospel chorus go a long way in a cramped van.”

“Delorean Dynamite” – Todd Terje.

“It’s beautiful and dark, and brings the hype all at the same time. Atari personified.”

“Hell Broke Luce” – Tom Waits.

“If you ever felt like speeding on an empty highway at 3am, bellowing like a drunken sailor, have we got the song for you.”

Cocoa Butter Kisses” – Chance The Rapper.

“Without exaggerating, we listened to this every single morning we got in the van, sometimes multiple times in a row, depending if there was traffic, for two weeks while we were recording in Nashville. Hasn’t gotten old yet.”
