We’ve been fans of the Liverpool alt-folk collective, Cavalry, for a while now. But since last year’s sudden arrival to the scene with their gorgeous début ‘Lament’, the band had taken a prolonged breather, leaving us high and dry, and craving for some new material to savour. But today marks a change. The quintet have resurfaced with a beautiful and beguiling new cut entitled ‘An Understanding’.
Caught somewhere in between the defeating grace of Benjamin Francis Leftwich and the quaint anthemia of Villagers. Cavalry continue their ascent to with ‘An Understanding’. A gentle, crescendoing undercurrent of indie rhythms is interwoven by a stirring electronic pulse, paving the way for vocalist Alan Croft’s emotive howling voice to take centre stage. He pleads for clarity, to uncover the other persons inner thoughts: “Let me understand your life…show me where you are”. To ultimately gain an understanding of that significant other.
Cavalry always enchant, but nothing previously has come close to the effecting power of ‘An Understanding’. It’s a gallant mindset teamed with vocal sincerity and visceral emotion. And that combination will never let you down.
