Read on for Bitter Sweet Symphonies top 15 artists to watch in 2014.

REY PILA

Rey Pila

Mexico City’s Rey Pila have just come off a big UK tour with Albert Hammond Jr., and they are also signed to New York’s Cult Records, they are already onto a winning combination. Rey Pila are significantly good at what they do, I highly tip them to be the big breakouts of 2014, true purveyors of 80’s styled electronic indie rock, it’s anthemic, it’s moody, it’s danceable and most importantly it’s really catchy. Great, great band.

CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN

Catfish and the Bottlemen (Victoria Schofield)

Well, what can you say about Catfish and the Bottlemen, other than they are destined for stadium sized venues. With their explosive blend of guitar driven indie rock, they have been storming the airwaves this year and with a début album scheduled for release in 2014, it can only make them soar to greater heights.

This a band that aren’t afraid to put the work in, they have spent the last few years touring non-stop, only ever taking downtime to work on their début album. I mean, that’s something to praise if nothing else, they really are one of the most hard working bands out there. I expect them to gain even more success in 2014. It’s the year of the Bottlemen.

FLYTE

Flyte

This four piece from Hackney have only recently come onto my radar. I had previously heard of them but never actually listened to them, but after listening to their latest track, Harley Street, I’m already obsessed. This indie pop band are already making a big name for themselves, after the release of their Live EP back in September, they have steadily been gaining a loyal fan base. With similarities to The Beatles and Talking Heads, their début track , Over and Out, is a perfect example of what makes them so delightful.

JOEL BAKER

Joel Baker

Soulful folk singer, Joel Baker, has definitely been my favourite find of this year. With the release of his début EP, Long Sleeves, earlier in the year and the backing he has gained from Radio 1 and BBC Introducing, 2014 is sure to be his year.

What sets Joel apart from just being another acoustic act or another folk singer, is his R’n’B roots and love for Hip Hop, which he often incorporates into his live sets, covering Kayne West’s, Can’t Tell Me Nothing. With a new EP, on the way very soon and surely a UK tour planned for 2014, it’s looking like a very exciting year to come for this Nottingham native.

K.I.D.S

K.I.D.S

K.I.D.S is the brainchild of Swedish singer, Rosanna Munter and London’s, Charles Cave (bassist in White Lies). After teasing us all year with a few tracks scattered on their soundcloud and YouTube, 2014 sets to be the year that they release their début album, so finally lots more K.I.D.S music for us all to sink our teeth into. K.I.D.S blend of glistening, moody synth pop is adorned with lappings of big guitar and bass layers, that drive the songs to soar and roar with passion. A duo that have created something really special.

NIGHT ENGINE

Night Engine

London’s Night Engine make anthemic, synth guitar pop. Having already supported the likes of The 1975 and King Charles this year, it is safe to say Night Engine are destined for the big leagues. Think of a sunnier Joy Division and mix that with major influence of the band, David Bowie and you’ll come to close to their sound.

PRIDES

Prides

Scottish electro pop three piece Prides, have certainly made their mark this year, with their début single, Out of the Blue. Causing everyone to sit up and take note of this band, they have been teasing us recently with lots of new music. With new songs like The Seeds You Sow and Messiah, they are on track to become big names in the industry. They just know how to write the perfect song, they are the equivalent to Chvrches. Truly brilliant, 2014 is sure to be a big year for these guys.

STORMS

Storms

London four piece Storms, are one of my favourite bands to come out of 2013, really underrated in my opinion. 2014 is set to be their breakout year though, with the promise of a début album on the cards and lots more touring, it is safe to say things will be heating up a lot more for this band. Their début EP, Visions, is quite simply marvellous and their début single, I Had A Vision Last Night, proves why they set for greatness.

CIRCA WAVES

Circa Waves

Liverpool’s indie guitar pop darlings, Circa Waves, are definitely heating things up with their music. After only releasing three songs so far, there is already lots of buzz and hype surrounding them, and rightly so, they are an exciting band.

After touring this year with Swim Deep, Two Door Cinema Club and headlining their first UK tour, they have a UK tour scheduled for February 2014, so get on that, if you like what your hearing. 2014 is surely set to be their year. They have the potential to be as big as Vampire Weekend or The Strokes, in my opinion.

MIRROR SIGNAL

Mirror Signal

Mirror Signal aka. Steven Barker, is a star in the making, with his blend of electronic R’n’B influenced soulful pop, he is quickly making a name for himself. His music is full of groove and swagger, a  true musician and songwriter, he’s great live too. We are sure to be hearing a lot from his young artist in the coming year.

PATTERNS

Patterns

Costa Rica’s Patterns blend of sun-kissed dance pop makes it feel like summer every day. They are on another level, they have succeeded in creating some of he most addictive, anthemic, synth laden dance tunes of the last decade, even though they are a new band themselves. Their début album, Dangerous Intentions, made it all the way to the number 1 spot on iTunes and in 2014, they are set to conquer the world, touring and spreading their love of music to everyone.

SISTERS

Sisters

Limerick’s dream grunge trio, Sisters are surely going to take over everyone’s world next year, bringing their 90’s revolution to the modern day. Angst has never sounded so good. Their début single, Hush Hush, is a beauty, definitely one of the best songs to come out of this year, you can’t beat a dual boy/girl vocal, it’s just right.

JAMES BAY

James Bay

James Bay has a truly magnificent voice, he is going to be one of the big breakouts of 2014 I can tell you now. This year has been pretty good for this young singer/songwriter: releasing his début EP , The Dark of the Morning, touring with Kodaline, playing his first headline show in London and having that sell out in record timing.

He’s just announced a UK tour for 2014, in conjunction with Communion, expect to be wowed by his soulful voice and perfectly crafted songs, he’s currently recording some new material in Nashville as we speak, so there’s lots more exciting things to come from him in the new year.

DROWNERS

Drowners

New York based four piece, Drowners are just the perfect cure for any time you’re feeling down, or just need a pick me up. Put one of their songs on and you’ll be instantly happy. Drowners have it down, every one of their songs being under three minutes, perfect for the time conscious individual, I know saying that you may be sceptical but they do it so well.

They are ultimately one of the best newcomers to come out of this year, they make it look so easy to create the perfect indie rock n’ roll pop song. There are clear hints of The Smiths in their sound, though Drowners are so much more sunnier in their approach, filled with jangly guitars and classic New York swagger, they are so cool and they know it. Their début self-titled album is set for release on 28th January 2014.

WOLF ALICE

Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice, really did tug at our heartstrings this year with their song, Blush, showing us that they do have a sensitive side lurking just beneath the surface of their ravaged gritty grunge rock. Well, it’s been quite the year for this London band, going on their own headline tour, supporting Swim Deep, releasing hit single after hit single and their most successful release to date, the Blush EP. 2014 will be a continuation of building on their successes, hopefully another big UK tour on the horizon and a début album.
