Few songs nowadays are as packed with explosive potential as the latest Gold Class track Kids On Fire. As of now, if there’s ever a need to demonstrate what tension sounds like to a packed auditorium of students, all a lecturer needs do is play them the first 30 seconds of this track.
The song’s initial simplicity is its core strength. The propulsion of the rhythm section, with the bass pounding out a single note with bloody-minded conviction, and the drums sounding mechanical yet undeniably human, makes for an ear-grabbing start, and that’s just the beginning.
When the vocals enter, they’re clear, direct, and strong, the intonations both soothing and brooding, yet backed by a hint of real power that can (and will) be tapped into at any given moment. But perhaps more delightful is the guitar, which crackles and fizzes in short stabs of melody, dancing around the solid rhythmic backing like a deranged dancer circling a totem pole.
And when the band steps out of their boundaries, from the simplistic drive of the song’s buildup and into the explosive chorus, the impact is fantastic. This moment of release, in which Curley’s vocals sustain the melody atop the chaos that the instrumental unleashes, is by far the most satisfying pay-off I’ve heard in music this year.
This is rock music as it should be, powerful and aggressive, yet also introspective and nuanced. Gone is the glamour and self indulgence of yesteryear. This pared down, tense post-punk is the future for the genre, and Gold Class are in a league of their own.
‘Kids On Fire’ is taken off the debut album ‘It’s You’, available on Felte Records.
