Fuzzy and moody, ‘Paycheck’ is the first cut we can hear from Slingshot Dakota’s forthcoming album ‘Break’. The Pennsylvania two-piece are made up of drummer Tom Patterson and vocalist/keyboardist Carly Commando. The fact that this band uses no guitars is a surprise, owing to the driving textural sounds of the keyboards which provide a great backdrop for Commando’s commanding vocal delivery, which are reminiscent of Kagoule.
The dark and brooding verse sections make a perfect foil for the light uplifting choruses. Sound-wise that is, the howled refrain of ‘we’re working from paycheck to paycheck’ probably not meant to be the most uplifting of lines…
Either way, this is a great garage-indie discovery that you can check out below.
Second album ‘Break’ is out on 11th March, via Topshelf Records.
