‘Electrify’ comes with the promise that fans of Weezer or Ash will love it, and whilst the off-kilter pop-punk chorus is pretty reminiscent of the latter. I had difficulty picking up any similarity to the former, except from frontman Jamie, looking a little bit like Rivers Cuomo.
Instead, on the basis of this track Indoor Pets are a very welcome addition to a burgeoning noise-rock scene, albeit with a slightly more accessible indie-pop edge than the likes of Wand or Metz. In fact, the one group I couldn’t help but be reminded of was Brit new-grungers Dinosaur Pile-Up, the riffs and by turns sultry and staccato vocals especially.
There are hooks aplenty in the singing and the instrumentation, and the washy feedback breakdown provides a classic hold-release moment. Ultimately, the song is as simple and effective as the title suggests, which makes it a lot of fun.
